The significance of literacy goes beyond just being able to read and write; it is essential for economic growth, societal advancement, and personal empowerment. By promoting critical thinking, communication abilities, and information access, literacy enables people to successfully negotiate the complexity of today’s world. It boosts lifelong learning by empowering people to constantly pick up new skills and adjust to their environment. Moreover, literacy is a key factor in social inclusion since it empowers people to engage with their communities, fight for their rights, and take an active role in civic life. Economically speaking, employability and productivity are directly correlated with literacy because it provide access to better employment options and higher earning potential. Essentially, literacy is not just a skill, it is a transformative agent that enables individuals, strengthens communities, an drives progress in society.’
Illiterate people find it difficult to participate completely in society and it creates many problems in many facets of life. It impedes people’s ability to obtain important information, making it more difficult for them to comprehend legal paperwork, news reports, and healthcare instructions. This limits their ability to advance both personally and professionally. Additionally, illiteracy prevents people from advancing economically by limiting their access to lucrative employment and business opportunities, which feeds poverty cycles. It also hurts people’s relationships, civic engagement, and confidence. It is associated with social isolation and poor health outcomes. In addition, people who lack literacy are more likely to be taken advantage of and mistreated since they are unable to spot and react to dishonest behavior, which makes them targets of financial fraud and labor exploitation.
Momentum’s Adult Literacy Program is designed to meet the needs of illiterate people who are 15 years of age and older by taking account of the above-mentioned considerations. There are three separate stages in this program:
The duration of the Basic Literacy program is 04 months, the Advanced Literacy Program is 3 months and 5 months are dedicated to the Vocational Skill Development Program.
The course begins with teaching the Nazra Quran, and then students gradually advance to reading and writing simple and sophisticated words, phrases, paragraphs, stories, and essays in Urdu. By the end of this phase, students are literate to the extent specified by the national standard, meaning they can read written texts and write short stories or paragraphs. Furthermore, during the basic reading phase, numeracy abilities are introduced, which include counting and simple arithmetic operations up to four digits. Because of this education, learners are prepared to use mathematical concepts in their everyday lives.

The Vocational training program for Neo-literate comprises numerous essential components specifically designed to satisfy their needs, with an emphasis on income production. To determine demand, a market survey is conducted first, and then vocational training in pertinent trades is made available. Through practical instruction from qualified teachers, participants can develop their networks and acquire confidence. Participants in entrepreneurship modules gain the ability to launch and run enterprises, and continued mentoring helps them succeed. Through networking opportunities and refresher courses, the program also provides an opportunity for lifetime learning to improve skills and stay current with industry trends.
The Basic Literacy program is compulsory for all illiterates, while the other two programs cater to
individuals interests and willingness to enhance their skills. Educated individuals are also welcome to attend in the vocational training courses offered within the Adult Literacy Center community.
